Government Takes Action Against Online Scams

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Manet has announced decisive measures to combat the rising threat of online scams across Cambodia. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Abhisit Bandit Sar Sokha, introduced the establishment of a specialized commission dedicated to cracking down on online scams in Phnom Penh and throughout the provinces of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Leading this effort is Santibandit Sok Phal, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior, who chairs the commission aimed at bolstering security and shielding citizens from various forms of online fraud.

The commission's mandate includes the implementation of directives outlined in Royal Government Traffic Guide No. 07, issued on 18 August 2019. Central to its mission is the escalation of investigations into online scam activities across different geographical areas. Capital and Provincial Unity Command units are mobilized to conduct targeted operations prioritized by the commission.

Empowered to deploy relevant officials for coordinated and efficient operations, the commission ensures swift apprehension of perpetrators and submission of pertinent evidence for judicial review under Cambodian law, including procedures for foreign offenders.

To enhance operational efficacy, the commission convenes weekly meetings to assess operational insights and strategize future actions. Regular reports are presented to Deputy Prime Minister Abhisit Bandit Sar Sokha for approval and further strategic guidance, ensuring a unified approach in combating online scams nationwide.

This initiative underscores Cambodia's proactive measures in safeguarding its populace against cyber threats, reinforcing legal integrity, and fortifying public trust in online transactions.
